A digital SIM built into your phone. It lets you add a data plan without a physical SIM card, and it sits alongside your usual SIM.
Most recent phones do, including iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer and Google Pixel 3 and newer. On iPhone, look in Settings under Mobile Service (Cellular in the US) for Add eSIM. On Android, look under SIMs (SIM manager on Samsung) for Set up an eSIM or Add eSIM.
Once it's installed, choose the eSIM for mobile data in Settings, then turn on data roaming for that line. That doesn't add roaming charges. It's how the eSIM joins a local network.
